Re: [APML] OT very OT:network and/or cable modem help

The cable "modem" (router) has been set to only allow one or two
DHCP calls (the automatic configuration).

What you need is a box that will sit between your local hub and
the router to provide NAT (network address translation) service.
I don't have any brands/models handy but as a WAG it should run
in the $200-400 range. A NAT translator will allow more than
one computer, usually a class C range, to "share" a single outside
IP address. Your ISP's DHCP server will only "see" one address,
and so allow you to bypass that restriction.

Now doing this _may_ violate your revised terms of agreement for
the service. Most ISPs, though, practice a "don't ask, don't tell"
policy. They can tell that you are doing it but as long as you
don't bother them for tech help they don't care.

Your ISP is likely giving you a line of BS. Security has nothing
to do with it. They are more likely running out of IP addresses <g>.
