Hi Alan...
The major problem we have here in Italy is the sky... In particular at northside, there is a lot of light pollution. So there is a kind of "overprocessing" for trying to solve this problem, in elaboration.. I guess that this is the reason for which the images look so flat!
Everytime we go for astropics we travel at least an hour and half, because close to our houses it is simply impossible to take decent picture...
So going deeper with the exposure or taking more images will not produce better results, at least with film!
This is the first reason for which recently I switched to CCD, my friend (Luca Zaggia, Marco Lorenzi and so on) as well as me and me.
Do not know the quality of sky in close to your roof!
