RE: [APML] M33 on Fuji Super HQ200
Hi Alan,
I also surprised myself on this film, since as many folks know, I've tested
dozens of films and totally overlooked this one from the start on the
(false) assumption that it was of the same "4th color layer" ilk as the rest
of the Fuji consumer and professional print films. The only real reason I
tried it to begin with was a whisper of the possibility that it might maybe
be an OK film, heard right here on APML a few months ago. This one has
certainly been hiding in plain sight to me for the whole time. I guess I
didn't want to believe it could have been so. Sheesh.
I think it's much more than "barely passable", based on the many films I've
tried. In fact, it was so surprisingly good when I first tested it a few
weeks ago that I was hesitant to believe it and unequivocally endorse it,
hence the additional shots! Now I'm ready to give it my unequivocal
endorsement, though...
I'm with you on this one: this film also solves my own problem of not
wanting to be forced into digital just yet. That problem was being
significantly aggravated by the recent discovery that my few remaining rolls
of Supra 400 seem to have developed (no pun intended) a nasty red color
shift through storage, even though every roll I own has been in the
refrigerator since purchase, making them lots less than the great they used
to be. And although E200 and Provia 400f are good films, I've never been as
happy with them. Provia in particular tends to bloat out my stars too much
for my tastes, although the colors are pretty.
Anyway, I certainly am thrilled to have a good print film to use again!
Wishing for clear skies for all of us,
-- Pat Freeman

Me too, great job. What amazes me is that this film has been around
awhile. I've heard talk of Super HQ100 for years, but not this 200
version. What happened to us? Or is it that this is really just a
'barely passable' film that is now looking better because our options
are almost gone?
Well, I think I'll start stocking up on it anyway. Unless I hear
otherwise, I'll assume the 'fridge is the best place.
Alan
