RE: [APML] Layers
I'm still at PhotoShop version 5, but for most image adjustment work I use
PictureWindow Pro. Color balancing, levels, and saturation adjustments seem
to have finer, superior control than PS tho the user interface takes some
getting used to, especially with masks.
It has full 16-bit/48-bit support (or 64-bit support, if you have the alpha
channel) for all operations.

Epson claims the 4870 (which is what I'm using) does 48bits/pixel "internal"

Hence my hesitation to knock the image to 8bits when I'm tweaking it in PS.
Its simply a waste of the scanned bits.
