Well, the scanners software can sometimes do a better job than we can, 
especially if we don't have much experience.

If you scan on the normal settings, and your histogram is not clipped on 
either end, and you save in 16 bits, then you will be fine. And it will be 
a lot easier to work with the image. Personally, I never save scanned 
images in raw format.

I would scan and save as a 16 bit TIFF file.

Do some minor corrections in the pre-scan, but just make sure the histogram 
is not clipped.
