You really should do a prescan, even on the raw scans, so the scanner can 
correctly set the exposure for the densest and least dense parts of the 
slide or neg.

You're going to fill that up quicker than you think. You better have a CD 
burner.

If the scanner does an auto-focus you should be ok.

If you set it to "slide media" it will probably scan it as a positive, even 
if it is a negative. then you'll have to remove the orange film base, and 
you'll stretch the data even more.

Honestly, and don't take offense, at your experience level, I'm not sure I 
would even recommend you scanning in raw until you better know what you're 
doing...
