RE: [APML] Film Scanners
Ulrich,
I have the Scan Dual IV, and it seems to work quite well. I have scanned
both daylight and astrophotos with it. Some examples of the astrophoto scans
are at http://www.w4je.com/ap0408.htm. If you want to see other examples
(daylight pix, etc.), I can post some of those.
I have just moved into medium format (Pentax 6x7), so even though I've only
had the Scan Dual IV for a few months, I am thinking of moving to the Epson
4870, a flatbed scanner. From what I can gather, flatbeds are approaching
the quality of dedicated film scanners, with the added advantages that they
can scan medium format (and large format in the case of some), and they cost
1/4 as much as a good medium format film scanner. Even if you only want to
scan 35mm, another advantage is that the flatbeds can usually scan multiple
35mm frames in one pass. One of them (the Canon 9950F I believe) can scan
30(!) frames at one time. If you have a lot of film to scan, this really
makes a difference!
So you may want to look into both dedicated film scanners and the flatbeds.
If you decide to go with a film scanner and the SD IV fits the bill, give me
a shout--I may be willing to sell at a good price, and put the money toward
a flatbed that can do my medium format film.
In any event, let us know what you end up doing!
Clear skies,
Andy

Subject: [APML] Film Scanners
Good morning everyone!
I'm thinking about getting a new film scanner soon. I was always somewhat
unhappy with my SprintScan 35 when scanning dense slides, and since I have a
new PC that doesn't have a slot for the old SCSI card, I want to get a
modern USB scanner.
Right now, I want it mainly for daylight photos, but I will want to scan
astrophotos (slides!) with it, too. So, what's "in"? I don't want to spend
more than about $300, preferably less, but I know that could mean poorer
quality.
I saw a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III at a friend's place this weekend, and
it did a good job on daylight photos, but I don't know how it works on dark
slides. Besides, there's a Dimage IV now. What are your experiences with
current film scanner models? I only need a 35mm scanner, no medium format
yet.
Ulrich
