Re: [APML] Image Processing Question: Gaussian Blur vs Unsharp Masking

Yes, there a lot of solutions for your problem, and
the best I can suggest to you is SGBNR. Roughly, it
blurs only where are no edges in your images, and then
bluring only the noise, while keeping the sharp
appearence of the image.
Go to http://pleiades-astrophoto.com and download
PixInsightLE. Read carefully all the documentation and
play with the paramethers.
Another solution is a multiscale approuch: wavelets.
Here you isolate high-frecuency features in a layer,
and you can blur that layer in a way similar to SGBNR.
Of course that the noise is a very high frecuency
feature, so, in many cases, it will quite easy to
identify those layers where it lives. Again, use
PixInsight's implementation of Á Trous Wavelets (read
the documentation) to get rid of it.
As you might think, combining wavelets noise
reduction, with SGBNR gives you a noise killer combo.
With wavelets you remove the high-frecuency one, and
with SGBNR the larger.
