Re: [APML] OT: M81/82 w Canon D10
I do more watching than talking with this forum these days, but I can't
resist responding to a fellow Canuck who pays me a generous compliment!
So, thanks Stuart!
Believe it or not, that M81/82 shot was taken last May 3rd (I believe), less
than one month after I purchased the camera. That night was my first attempt
at doing astrophotography with the camera!
At that point only a few photographers had published stuff with the 10D,
including Johannnes, so I knew it had SOME potential, but Johannes was an
expert and I was not. I really purchased the camera for daytime photography,
and I was just hoping that the 10D would be somewhat satisfactory for
astrophotography so I could dabble in some lunar and deep sky shooting from
time to time.
That May evening was a night of wonderful surprises and changed everything.
I also got good shots of the Sunflower galaxy and the Leo Trio. Since then I
have become totally hooked on daytime photography, and done more
astrophotography than I ever imagined. I have some of the results at
http://www.pbase.com/derek_baker. but be warned, I have not updated the
gallery since September. Since then, I've gotten other good shots and
improved my processing skills. Someday I will set up my own website, so you
can see what I have in the way of updated material. And, now that I have the
latest version of Images Plus, with a good RAW conversion routine, I should
go back and reprocess many of the pics. But I've been busy with other
things.
The 10D wasn't cheap (especially in Canadian dollars last spring), but has
been worth every cent spent! I've even had photos published in two major
Canadian newspapers, The Hamilton Spectator and The Toronto Star, and in
Canada's premier astronomy magazine, Skynews. All this from someone who had
never really taken photography seriously prior to this year! An
astrophotgraphy expert I am not. The fact that I was able to image those
galaxies (in somewhat hazy skies when they were rather low in the sky) is
proof enough that if a luddite like me can be successful, then anyone can do
it!
So, go get a 10D if you can! Enjoy!
Thanks again for the pat on the back Stuart...and also to Todd who runs the
website.
cheers!
Derek Baker
