I've seen several LRGB eclipse shots from others. They usually use an R channel exposure as the L, but at least for the exposures I took during totality, such an L channel added too much to the deep part of the umbra, in my opinion. The straight RGB versions I did looked flat, adding an L made up from a grayscale version of the RGB seemed to help it "just right".
But I did use an R based L channel for the exposures I took just a few minutes before and after totality. Those exposures were so short--- .2 seconds--- that they needed all the help they could get to show any deep umbral detail.
