You're correct about very wide angle lenses.
Although it might seem that any f2.8 lens would record a given meteor at a 
certain density, in practice it doesn't work out that way. 
Wide angle lenses; ie. 35, 28, 24, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14mm have much less light 
gathering ability than, say a 50mm f1.4 lens stopped to f2.8.
It has to do with the actual diameter of the lens opening or iris.
