Alan,
Channel Mixer is one way to adjust the color balance. It allows you to divert signal from each channel to another. Very occasionally, I use it in conjunction with a mask to control exactly what is effected. I would not worry about learning it (although I think it is fairly simple).
Overall the most useful tools for manipulating color are levels, curves, and hue/sat.
