Alan I use the SS4000 also. You should definetly scan at 12 bit color depteh
(the highest it goes). My files are typically around 120Mb. My LRGB Veil
Nebula shot (6 color, 1 Tech Pan) is archived on 6 CD's. Generally scanning
at 4000 Dpi is oversampeling with color negative film. I scan at 4000Dpi
because I figure I can process information out all on my own so I better be
safe and scan at full res.
You can scan Raw but set the histogram with the scanning software. Set
it like in photoshop where you don't clip the dark end. I usually leave a
little extra on the dark side and do the final histogram set with PS.
