Jose,

You hit the nail on the head. Masking in the core of M42 allowed Grant to show it without being overexposed. Jerry Lodriguss published a superb article "Combining Exposures with Layer Masks " in S&T Jan 2001. The article is available in S&T's on-line archive. There is also info on it in Jerry's excellent web site http://www.astropix.com. By following Jerry's cookbook instructions, it will help you learn Photoshop layers, masks, curves, etc, which will help you tremendously for using other processing techniques.
