They are hard to find, but stick at it, they do show up on
Ebay. There was never much of a market for them in the first place I
think. My parents have one (no, not for sale), and even brand new, they
were usually special order.
The reason we had one was for specialized copy work. Combined
with a "medical" macro lens - flat front element designed specifically for
flat feild up close copy work of documents, maps, etc, the varimaginfier
was often used in that sort of specialized work, so it was far from an
everyday item. In fact, outside of document archiving, medical photography
(IE - tissue samples on a light board, etc), and astro-photo work, I have
never heard of it used for anything else. Not saying it wasn't, just
didn't hear about it.
One last thing - they do dim things down a bit, so they are not
the "cure all" they might appear to be. Even for daytime use & macro work,
I often find it easer to turn up the lights on my copy board in order to focus.
good luck
