[APML] flares/rainbows around stars -- followup
Over the past year there have been reports of flares and rainbows around
stars in images scanned from slide film. Some of the APML threads with
examples include:
"red and blue tails on stars?" thread:

"Best recent model 120 format scanner?" thread:

Jeff Ball's example:

I first noticed this problem on my 3.5 year old Polaroid Sprintscan 4000
the first time I scanned an astro slide about a year ago. Polaroid
recently determined the problem to be a slight misalignment in the
scanner's CCD, so the problem seems to be with individual units and not
particular scanner models. The estimated cost to align the CCD is
between $400 and $660. The upper estimate is about the current price of
replacing the SS4000. The lesson learned is to test your scanner with
an astro slide during the warranty period.
