RE: [APML] Barn door or mini EQ

Hi David,

I have never had good success with these types of mounts (I've tried 3 different ones so far, including one sold a few years back by Orion).

I would go with the Barndoor mount and try that first.  You can make a simple one for about $15 or so.

My solution to the small/portable mount dilemma was twofold; (1) Barndoor for really portable wideangle use, and, (2) a Vixen Great Polaris GEM mount for lightweight lenses (up to about 300mm or so).  I will be using the Vixen and Barndoor for travel also.  At home with more equipment I use a G-11, but I would definitely NOT want to drag that on a trip.

Good luck with it,

Scott

Subject: [APML] Barn door or mini EQ

Hi all,

I have a good astrophotography setup that I like. However, some times I dont have the time to carry all the equipment to a dark site. I've been thinking about building a barn door tracker to use with a normal camera and then I saw this little mount on orions page. Its basically a EQ-1 mount on a very small tripod (I guess I can use my gitzo mount instead) and it comes with a drive for RA. Do you think this mini eq will be better than a barn door tracker as a light weight normal camera setup to use in the fields?

Any comments appriciated

cheers
