Re: [APML] Dark Sky Areas in Huntsville AL

Dear Ben:

The earlier post about the dark sky site is very useful...except as he points out, the clickable map isn't working in .gif mode. The java applet is very slow when I try to use it...I may wait 20 minutes before it finally comes up. If you try it. don't give up hope for a while.

I have also included a link for the clear sky site. This idea originales from a fellow in canada and I have found it very useful. You will note some links under the graph. One is called "light pollution map". If you click on that link, it will show you a map of light pollution around the Huntsville area. You can compare the bright spots against a regular map and match up the cities to the bright spots. The darker areas are blue or grey or black. It is not as convenient as the dark sky map...which also links to a regular map from the Census Bureau. But it is quick and dirty compared to the Dark Sky site in its current state.

If you nose around on this site a bit, you can get clear sky charts for other cities in Alabama and around the USA, etc.

As Ever,

Subject: [APML] Dark Sky Areas in Huntsville AL

I have just bought a Nikon F3 at an photo flea market and would like to try and record some star trails.  Does anyone know some place or someone I could contact to have a little bit of dark sky.  I am looking for someplace in the Huntsville Alabama area.
