RE: [APML] Payment for astrophotos
Jerry
I think the "sad state" is not so much from being overly concerned about the
bottom line but rather the current thinking that you are owed, or deserving,
or ENTITLED (don't get me going about entitlements :) )
I think you personally get paid for your photos because you work at
marketing and negotiating and create value that way.
Trying to get everyone to go on some pseudo strike and withhold images in
order to force publishers to pay more is not the way.
A lot of people do AP for their personal sense of accomplishment, regardless
of whether their images get any public exposure, and a lot of APers get a
lot of satisfaction out of some public exposure without any worry about
getting paid. Those are the people who are "competing" with the people who
want to make money.
Paying people when you don't have to isn't "the right thing", we aren't
talking about charity here, the bottom line is real money, it comes out of
someone's pocket.
As a health professional I do the ethical "right thing" all day, providing
services when I know I may not get paid, not cutting corners in service or
materials even though no one would ever know, etc etc, I just don't like it
when people have the current attitude that you owe them something. So I
think it is wrong that people think they should get paid for their photos
without any justification other than a web site with a chart.
