Honestly, I didn't even try to guide on the comet using the ST-4 control box by itself. I only used ccdtrack so I could "see" what I was guiding on was in fact the comet. I'm sure (now that I think about it) I could have used the box alone without an issue. 
When doing "normal" autoguiding I much prefer to use the box by itself so I get the fastest corrections. With ccdtrack, there is at least a 2 second delay from the time of exposure until a correction is made due to downloading overhead. I have found that in my case it works best to use the fastest correction times possible. To do so I often do "crazy" things like using faint mode AND a boost of 4 to keep the correction times down below a second or so. I've never had the problems some report. In fact, since I "fixed" my G-11, My tracking has been awesome (mostly A1's at 1130mm guiding F.L.), I just can't focus consistantly...
