[APML] Scratched negatives from Lab- Need advice

The lab I have been using to process my print film has been "scratching"
the negatives severely. It seems to be on the emulsion side (dull side) &
the scratches run lengthwise. So my first question is "does anyone truly
get "scratch-free" negs back?
What are the sources of scratches? I know nothing of the developing process.
I do not get the negs cut but they are in the plastic sleeves... does
inserting them in the sleeves cause this? My camera rails/ rollers are
spotless (Nikon F3HP) & is just used for AP work.
I'm sure others on the list have been through this. If you can, please share
your experience or provide some insight as to the best approach to use.
I was going to try another large professional lab but I had used them for
some test shots sometime ago & when I looked back on those negs they had
"some" scratches just not as severe.
Do you ask to be first in line after they clean the equipment? :')
Thank you, Gerry
