Hi list!
Greetings from Cyprus.
The latitude of Cyprus is 34 33’ -
35 34’ north and its longitude 32 16’ - 34 37’ east.
Cyprus is the third largest
island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia with an area of 9,251 sq.
kilometres of which 1,733 are forested. It has a maximum length of 240 kms from
east to west and a maximum width of 100 kms from north to south.
I thought to tell you how I spent
my Leonid Adventure!
On Friday night (16th of
Nov.) I have traveled about two hours to go up to Troodos mountain to
the highest peak, Olympus, at 2 000 m.
At that night I saw about 5 meteors
(all night).
The next day I left because it was
-2oC.
On the 17th (Saturday night) we had
very strong winds, so I didn't go outside.
Last night on the 18th, I went
about 20Km from Nicosia just to get away from the city lights.
I went to a Monastery to watch the
Leonids. I stayed there for a couple of hours.
I have seen about 15-20 meteors in
two hours. BUT the most amazing thing is that about 5 of them were so long. They
had so long tails that (beleive it or not) I had the time to turn the camera
around and frame it!!! I didn't do it htough, because I was amazed and I was
keep watching to see where would it end.
Some of were starting from SE and
they ended to NW and some from E to W and they made this round curv. One
Leonid was deep orange.
For me it was worth it. Regardless
what I have passed the previous nights.
I had three cameras. A Nikon F2A, a
Pentax MESuper and an Olympus OM-1. All of them loaded with Fuji Super HG 1600.
I will have the films developed this afternoon. I will post the photos if they
are good.
Thank you for
listening!
Marios Iordanou.
