that you mention this - that's what I always do. How do I work with curves
properly? I've never really understood that...

You might want to mention to
beginners of PS to never use the sliders for "contrast/density" adjustment but
to use the curves instead... using the former shoves data right off the ends,
using the later manipulates "from within."
