RE: [APML] Nikon 600 f/4



I have found one important difference that may relate to lens flare
resistance.
Starting in 1985 they started adding a front flat UV filter/protector to the
lens. My 500 also has this as do the current 600f/4 AF's. It can't be
removed and I can only imagine that this may contribute to flare.
My 1982 600edif did not have this. I had to buy a UV/lens-protecting filter.
It was 160 or 170mm and about 1/8th inch thick and cost over $400 as I
remember (had a nice case of its own :)). People were probably upset about
having to buy this separately but it had the huge advantage of being
removable allowing the lens to be used "naked".
