Hi Dennis,
A lot of this will depend on how much of a perfectionist you are. I have
used the Nikon 300/.2.8 series of lenses for more than 20 years. There are
some earlier ones with ED glass that definitely are not as good as more
recent ones.
The 3rd party manufacturers are a step down from Nikon and Canon. You get
what you pay for. If you are just going to use it with a hydrogen-alpha
filter, these lenses may be very good.
Olympus also makes a 350mm f/2.8 that Chuck used to have. He did some
awesome work with that lens. You may be able to find one of those used, and
kill two stones with one bird.
