[APML] 300 f2.8 lenses

All,

I'm looking for a 300 f2.8 lens and have focused on a Nikon
as they have a great reputation and are quite common.  I'm
holding out for a good deal, so it may take a while!

I'm wondering if I should consider one of the "LD" or "APO"
models from Sigma, Tamron, or other 3rd parties.  Any
thoughts/experiences with 3rd party lenses?  Are any up to
the quality of Nikon?  An advantage of a Tamron is that I
could also use it with my Olympus gear.
