Re: [APML] OT: Spam prevention?

Actually when you see an email address that you recognize sending out a
spam, it is almost a guarantee that it did NOT come from that person. Most
likely by far, it came from someone else whose computer is infected and
(using your example) has Rob Gendler in his address book. The virus that
sends these things out uses an email address from the infected computer's
address book and then "spoofs" the "from" field to make it appear though it
came from someone else. So if someone receives a spam from Alan Voetsch,
more than likely it came from someone else who has YOU in his address book.

I have gotten angry emails from people who supposedly received spam from me,
telling me to "clean up your system". In reality it came from someone else
with me in their address book.

As far as congress shutting down spam, that's a laugh. Yes they passed the
"can-spam" bill which has had absolutely no effect on spam, as far as I can
tell. They might as well pass a law against tornados.
