Great shots guys! The aurora was incredibly intense last night in
southern Alberta, Canada. Figures, I was all set up to shoot first light
with my ST-8Xe from Jim Janusz, the first clear weekend in 7 weeks! All I
had with me was equipment to shoot a 1x1.5 degree field, so I wasn't able to
shoot the aurora. It came out of nowhere, just after the clouds cleared out.
Within a half hour, it covered the entire sky with a massive pulsing
convergence in Coma.

It was a great chance to figure out technologies to combat aurora
and I found one! If the aurora is pure green, a red filter should block it.
This obviously wasn't green, going by all the wonderful images published
today. My first shot through a red filter was toast. But, a 10nm
hydrogen-alpha filter blocked it completely! I managed to get my first light
image, even though I couldn't even see Cygnus at times. *warning* This is an
off-topic image but I was rather stunned to be able to shoot this through
the natural light pollution last night!
