The only thing that really matters is your color space preferences...
Set Working Spaces RGB to sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Don't worry about CMYK, Gray or Spot
Set Color Management Policies RGB to Convert to working RGB
Set Profile Mismatches, Ask When Opening and Ask When Pasting, all checked on.
Set Missing Profiles, Ask When Opening to checked on.
These are the settings to keep you out of trouble.
If you open an image and it says it doesn't have a color space tag embedded
in the image, you are probably safest to assign sRGB to the image.
If you want to live more dangerously, you can use the settings I recommend
in my book, but I have come to realize since I wrote the book that you
really have to know what you are doing to use those, and most people don't.
The settings above are the safest, and I have even changed to these for
work that I send back to the newspaper.
