[APML] Last Reprocessed Comet Ikeya-Zhang Image
Here's the last reprocessed image I'll make known to the list. If
you like, you can visit my site over the next several weeks as I
plan to reprocess all my existing astro images. The image is of
Comet Ikeya-Zhang taken 4/4/2002 with a Pentax 67 using the 105mm
lens stopped down to F/4.0. Using Starry Night Pro, the ion tail
can be traced out to approximately 16 degrees as it disappears in
Cassiopeia. At the time of the exposure, the comet was only 5 1/2
degrees above the northwestern horizon. In the original file, the
stars near the horizon seem to be pulled downwards as atmospheric
refraction elongates their signature. It's actually pretty cool
looking. I hope we see another comet like Ikeya-Zhang soon;
however, I fear our lucky streak (i.e., "numerous" bright comets
over the last several years) is likely coming to an end.
