Contrast ratios are listed for nearly every LCD but not for CRTs. I
found one reference that stated CRTs were around 700:1. LCDs haven't
previously been that good but the better ones are matching or even
exceeding that in a few cases.
It is a spec that LCD manufacturers tend to overstate because there's
various ways to measure it. I'd try to find an independent test instead
of relying on the stated spec. For example, the Dell 2405FPW spec is
1000:1..... highest I've seen but one test I saw measured it at 612:1.
That's still a good number though. LCDs have it hands down on sharpness
and brightness over CRTs. The sharpness is probably why the noise is
much more obvious.
