RE: [APML] Imaging the Venus Transit

Geoff,
Well, yes you are right. There will be a gazillion images with Venus
being animated, or pasted at various intervals as it crosses the sun, or
high res halpha filtered images of the dot against the disk. These will
all be beautiful. For me, the image is one where there is no filter, an
orange blazing wavy sun is rising, maybe some trees at the base of the
disk, with a noticeable black dot on its surface and there, over there
in the corner of the frame standing out against the bright horizon is
something really cool like...well, that's my problem. I haven't found
that really cool thing yet. I don't think Philip can get Stonehenge in
on this one. It could simply be a really cool tree, the one with a
fractal-like pattern isolated on the horizon. I am hoping to get a
Greenbank telescope in on the picture, but I don't think it will happen
with the mountains and angles and such. The Traveler with 120 film
would be ideal for this shot, if I can get the shot unfiltered. The
600mm focal length should give me the dot of Venus and I have plenty of
room to frame foreground objects against the horizon. If I have to
shoot filtered, well now I am constrained by the size of the solar disk
as to what my foreground object may be. I am going to check it out
though. I don't care if it is digital or film. Just something a little
different, that's all.

Best regards,
Jeff Ball

Undoubtedly, an Eastern Hemisphere imager with a narrow band-pass
filter and a digital imaging device will get the 'Ultimate Exposure' for
this one... but I think that *Focal Length* and *Fast Film* will make
the best image for those of us in the Eastern US... those whom want to
shoot film, that is.

 Best... :o)
