 Hey Phil...

     Welcome to *successful* astro-imaging with film !!! You will always get a gradient with nearly any lens/mirror you use. Careful processing will minimize this 'light fall-off' effect. 

     Cropping is your number one ally, but you must take some gradient removal approach in post-processing. Jeff's advice is spot on. I'm still trying to find my 'comfort level' with gradient removal.
