Hey Thom...
Better think this over a little more... the transit will be well under way by sunrise in the US... you won't even need a filter to start with... if you plan to max the exposure possibilities.
Also, the atmosphere will be boiling, even if the solar disc is out of the extinction layer. The idea should be to use a fast film, to try and 'freeze' the poor 'seeing' conditions.
I plan to use my 8" SCT, unfiltered at first, with a 1000 Oaks glass filter at the ready. I'll use a dummy camera body with 'stop-down' metering to dictate my shutter speeds for the C-8.
Check the stopped-down camera meter reading at f11... shoot the C-8 at the indicated shutter speed on print film.
An accurate 'spot meter' adjusted for a 2 degree field will do the same job. Print film has a better exposure latitude... 400 or 800 might be the best choice. I also have some hi-saturation 200 speed AGFA color print film that I'll use for this event... I'll have all three of my OM-1's loaded with three different films... swap on the fly!
Slide film is nice for this image... but you either get it all... or nothing, with slide. Print film can be handled to extract the image... chemical lab or digital. I'd suggest you shoot print film... something faster than 100 ISO... this might be the best compromise!
Best... :o)
