[APML] RE: Comet Neat on May 15 w/ Nikon D100
Jeff, Stuart, Dick,
Thanks, regarding comet NEAT. Jeff, the blue fringes are an artifact of
the D100 noise reduction, or perhaps the high blue sensitivity of the
chip. The vignette problem is typical of fast lenses shot wide open.
Stopping down reduces this problem, but causes an increase in noise
because of the resulting longer exposures. It is always a tradeoff
somewhere. Thanks for the link on the software.
It seems as though a large part of the country has been weathered out
from Comet NEAT so far. On the plus side, the comet is having a nice
long run.

Ernie, that is a great shot! I was ready to scream when I saw the sky
Saturday night here - useless and here with this great pairing of M44
and NEAT. That's a keeper for sure!

Ernie,
That is a great shot. A couple of thoughts on the purple fringing.
Maybe Adobe Camera Raw can minimize this in its conversion as it has a
setting for correcting CA. Also, there is a new program out DxO Optics
I believe that is to be able to correct many common lens errors. It is
specific to the particular lens. Maybe worth looking into. Here is a
link. Great shot. Our weather has been pitiful during the current new
moon. It is really looking like a total washout. I get depressed when
May is a total wash.

Ernie,
Hope this gets through, a previous post was rejected for some "Implicit
destination" reason. Anyway, what I said earlier was that you comet
shot
was "neat." I was hoping to get the same shot with the same equipment
Sat. night, but took lightning pix instead. Had some good luck last
night and will post when I get a chance. Using a borrowed computer from
a cabin in the Davis Mtns (TX, US)...
