You may also merge all of the visible layers into a new image layer, while
keeping all the original layers intact. It sounds like this is what you are
trying to do.
1. Make the layers that you want to combine visible ("eyeball" icon on) and
turn off the visibility of the layers you don't want to combine.
2. Create a new, blank layer at the top of the layer stack.
3. Hold down the Alt key and select Layer > Merge Visible.
An image will appear in the blank layer (rather than the Background layer)
that combines the selected layers into a new image.
