Re: [APML] Expired Film Replacement

 Hey Fred...

Color print films suitable for astrophotography are indeed in a grim state. The aging PJ 400 will record HII nebula with a reddish-brown color, as Phillip mentioned. Here's an example from last year with the PJ 400:

There are a couple of possibilities, however. Fuji's 'Super HQ 100' has shown some capabilities... but not enough usage has been shown here at APML to make a reasonable assessment. This film is one of Fuji's low-end consumer films, isn't even mentioned on Fuji's website, and seems to be made just for Target and Walmart. I found some on e-bay for < $1.00 a roll! Here's a shot a did with this film a couple of years back... go to:

... the above image could use better processing, there's more in there than what you now see. Of course, with a speed of ISO 100, fast focal ratios will be best, but the film also has fine grain because of it's speed. Needs more tests, but seems to show promise... didn't Tony Hallas get a couple of nice shots with this film?

Koncica 'Super Centurion', both 400 and 800 speeds shows great promise as well... I'm crossing my fingers for this one when my 'Supra' stash runs dry. WH Wang has a remarkable shot with the 400 speed version of this film... see:

      http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/~wang/gallery/picutres/m16_to_24.htm

... availability seems to be an issue for now... this version of the film is still fairly new, at least for US consumers. You should probably get some of the good 'Supra' from Bill for your TSP outing.

Have Fun At The Texas Star Party !!!
