Today was marginal; I awoke spontaneously at 3:00 am and, since I was
awake, I had to peek outside. It was clear! I went downstairs,
gathered my gear and walked a few blocks to the local park.
Unfortunately, my first impression had been a bit misleading. The
transparency was pretty poor as it had been raining almost up until
midnight. And, from the park, my view in the correct direction passes
over Brooklyn Army Terminal (ferry terminal) and the Brooklyn
shipyards. The terminal is about a mile away, the shipyards 5 or so,
but with the high humidity, it was pretty washed out. I could barely
make out M31 with the binoculars, but since I was there, I went ahead
and shot some film anyway. Nada. A few of the brighter stars, but
nothing down low enough to spot the comet.
I think I'll have to give up on this one; I won't be able to get out
of the city until it is quite faint :-(
