For an inexpensive flatbed that does a decent job, I have an Epson
2450.  However, I would start out by going back to the place that did
the scan and telling them exactly what is wrong with the scans.  I
have to believe that an Imacon should be able to pull out the shadow
detail unless the image is badly underexposed....it is most likely a
case of operator error and them not understanding how to treat an
astrophoto.
