You may want to keep in mind that it is a possibility that he just got
the information wrong. He could have mixed something up looking at his
notes (maybe not paying attention, tired, on drugs...) 

My point: if you accuse someone of what we all suspect, and then he can
prove that he shot it, you may feel somewhat dismayed when it comes to
the apology. GO SLOWLY, give him a chance to hang himself.
