It's that dark where I live...
at least when facing east... the sky is the same color from the meridian right
down to the horizon... there's nothing out there but dark pine trees and this
tends to act like a giant carpet of flock paper so that any light that might
naturally occur in the sky does not get reflected back like it would in the
desert where a lot of the ground is very light in color and reflective. On top
of this, obnoxious lighting that does exist is usually throttled in the tree
tops because people up here like to "build in the trees" so very little light
from the 8500 people who live up here escapes to the sky... it gets hung up in
the trees.
