Hi Tony,
Well, there are many methods to select the stars. But, by deleting and
substracting method, you make a maks that is VERY useful for many other
processing techniques. And is better to make a separate selection to the
stars and the small scale / high brightness details. The main question is
that the stars must be isolated.
And sorry, I'm very bad with english (I'm spanish).... what means
"Holy smokes"?? :-P

Holy smokes... how about an
easier way... use the select>color range tool to select all the
stars... if you pick up any areas that you don't want, delete them with
the lassoo tool... now grow the selection by six pixels, feather by
three... reverse the selection... stars and adjacent areas are
protected... sharpen the rest of the image.
