Custom GEM's... was [Re: [APML] CG5 v/s Advanced CG5]

 Tim...

Brian Lula had an incredible example at WSP '03... check his site. I *think*
it's www.heavensglory... or something close to that. Here's a link that I do
have bookmarked... a British machinist who even makes his own worm gears!

              http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~chrish/eqnotes.htm

I'm also building a monster GEM in my 'spare' time... little here - little
there. Got some pics of the process, but haven't scanned/posted them yet.
Here's a shot of the gears I procurred from Astromart last year... see:

              http://home.att.net/~astropix/12_inch_Byers_gear.html
                                      and...
                 http://home.att.net/~astropix/18_Byers_gear.html

I'm going with a rather spartan design employing precision pillow block
bearings instead of custom machined bearing housings. What it may lack in high
frequency dampening it should make up for in heft... all my pieces thus far are
surplus and scrap, except for the all important worm drives - which were on the
used market themselves but are both brand new. I'm not going to cheap-out on
the percision machining though... the RA shaft will be *ground* to it's final
dimensions... tricky business considering the shaft if Fortal aluminum.

One of these years I'll add an 'Equipment' page to my site... I'll post an OT
letter here when I get that far.

Good Luck on Your Project !!!

 Geoff Powers
