Re: [APML] OT: spam blocking software

I'm grateful for this info too. Up till now I have been trying to get
spammers shut down by complaining to their ISP but it is a time consuming
and never ending process - as soon as one site gets shut down they start
again on another. At times my mail account has become almost inoperable
because it has been deluged with so much junk - much of it offensive
too. One tip I can give is to NEVER respond to any spam, not even to
"unsubscribe" - they just use this as a means of confirming that your mail
ID is valid, and the spam will increase.

A lot of worms and other nasty stuff can get onto your computer by remote
connection across the internet - you don't have to download anything - many
computers have worms running without their owners knowing - they scan a
wide range of IP addresses and attack anything that responds, then transfer
the worm to your computer. The way round this is to use a firewall. This
one is particularly good and is free: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/
After installing this I was amazed to see how many times my computer gets
attacked - every 5 minutes on average. This software also blocks unwanted
ads (like ad-muncher) and puts a .safe extension on any suspicious attachments.

It's a good thing to check regularly what is actually running on your
computer - shut down all active applications and click on System
Information -> Software Environment -> Running Tasks. This will reveal
any nasty stuff running in 'stealth' mode in the background.

Sorry for the long OT..
