RE: [APML] OT: spam blocking software
I agree that the quantity of spam has gotten ridiculous; It seems like it's gotten much worse in the past few weeks. The spam I get that advertises anti-spam software smacks of "protection money" to me. I've just started using SpamCatcher. Seems to work. Anyone else using SpamCatcher?
BTW on pop-up stoppers, I tried a few them last year, but they kept interfering with sites I like to use (e.g. ebay). The authors of the anti-popups assert that you can manually configure to fix such problems, but too much manual intervention was required, so I just forgot about anti-popups altogether. Do they work better now?
Here's another issue: spybots. If you have not taken any provisions to fight these things, they're almost certainly active on your computer. They report on your activities to their "masters" out on the internet, potentially reporting on almost everything you do. These should be illegal. I just ran a free anti-spybot program called SpyBot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.net/) that found a huge infestation of these parasites on my computer (I'm somewhat promiscuous on the internet), and at my consent, it wiped out all of them. My computer runs noticeably faster now. Who knows what private info I've already leaked out to who knows who. Anti-Virus software (e.g. norton, mcaffee) do NOT block spybots.
