My experience pushing
thousands of rolls of films is that it opens up the shadows... within reason. A
one stop push is very beneficial for astro work and it will definitely help you
capture the faint nebulosity if you did not expose quite long enough. Notice I
said "quite" because obviously it's no solution to film that simply wasn't given
enough exposure... but film that is "on the edge" of being properly exposed will
benefit from pushing. It can significantly increase your through put by cutting
back on exposure time ... and as long as you confine yourself to a one stop push
there isn't much grain increase, either. The only thing about all this is you
have to be very accurate in your exposures... strongly recommend testing before
going to a dark site.
