Re: [APML] Lunar Newbie

Yes, its a telephoto lens, not a telescope, I´ll try to dome some shooting tomorrow if the weather allows me (tropical weather is a curse). Mostly its cloudy all day since its winter here, there was only one night 5/12 when it was clear (by the way new moon!) and I made some shooting, hope to get the pictures soon.

Hey:

I´ve just bought a 70-300mm lens and I would like to do some lunar photography with it (as a start) and I would like to get some advices (exposure times, anything else) to get better results. Thanks.

Hi Roberto,

I take it then you are shooting the moon with a telephoto lens and not through a telescope.  The moon is basically a sunlit object.  Treat it as you would a terrestrial object illuminated by the sun.  The exposure for such is typically the inverse of the film speed at f/16.  i.e., ASA 400 would be 400th sec at f/16.  However, the moon at less than full phase has many shadows in craters, etc. along the terminator, making it slightly dimmer than an object using the "sunny 16" rule.  So you may want to bracket one or two f/stops wider with you initial exposures until you get the feel for how the moon will react to your photo system.
