William;
    When I first got my 8" Schmidt 10 years ago, I tried mounting it with
wooden rings. After that I tried Parallax rings - neither worked. All they
did was pinch the optics and ruin the image. You might have better luck, but
I ended up using the pin and bracket method which is how Celestron designed
it to mount on a C14. I mounted it and the guidescope (in Parallax rings)
onto a piece of wood, and fabricated a new bracket and "pin holder" out of
spare chunks of aluminum angle. I did this because the original pieces were
curved for a C14. It has worked out very well. I have a picture of it all at
http://members.shaw.ca/john.mirtle/files/schmidt-8in.jpg . If your Schmidt
is an original Celestron, and the collimation is good, put a dab of epoxy on
each grub screw on the secondary ring. The eliminates the need to learn the
art of collimation.
