Re: [APML] S&T's New Publishing Agreement
All of you responding to this thread have made good points but please
allow me to provide some clarifications of my original post. I talked
with S&T to further understand the agreement and it is really a much
better than many of our interpretations:
1) The Grant of Rights covers only the original form of the publication.
It is intended to allow S&T the right to archive and republish that
image exactly as shown WITH THE SURROUNDING TEXT and
IMAGES. It is also limited to the 72dpi of the original print medium.
If, for example, they wish to reuse the image as part of another article,
a new agreement and compensation would be required.
2) The $50 gift certificate for Gallery astrophots is new. It started with
the July issue. S&T has previously paid for photos used in articles.
But prior to July there was no compensation for Gallery photos other
than a few complementary issues of the magazine.
Now that I understand, I think this change is really a positive step for
astrophotographers. Consider the following:
- This move by S&T will certainly increase the quantity and quality
of submitted images. Do you think Astronomy magazine will continue
their no compensation policy? This could be the start of at least
some competition for quality astrophotos. That can only be a good
thing for us all.
- The more professional among us should focus their efforts on
submitting photos as part of articles in the magazine. The
compensation can be as high as $300 for those photos. Maybe
some of the more prolific authors will start to collaborate with
the top astrophotographers.
