In some ways it is. the portriat studios at Wal-Mart and Sears
ahve put many out work, the increasing quality of digital cameras and the
ability of people to process photo grade pritns at home on realtively
inexpensive home computers has taken it's toll, and overall, and the
appreciation of photography as either a profession or an art form has
takien a hit, and agian, I think due in part to digital , and other factors.
I was in Toronto (Canada's alrgest city) last month, visting my
favourite pro-photo stores & camera stores,a nd I see them all
hurting. They do nto admit it, but they are hurting. One of the major
ones went bankrupt and closed down last year, and y would think the
customer base from there would beef up the other stores in the area, but
instead, I see all the major stores shrinking and consoldating - and i am
tlakign about the pro gear stuff - medium format, etc, not the point and
shoot or digital home market.
So, it may not be dead, but it's a hurtin bad methinks.
